Australia head coach Tony Popovic insisted he stood by his failed gamble to change goalkeeper before the penalty shootout against Egypt, despite a last 32 exit. The Socceroos drew 1-1 then lost 4-2 on penalties.

According to L'Équipe, Patrick Beach, who had performed strongly, was replaced by Mathew Ryan at the end of extra time, with a substitution still available as no injuries occurred. Popovic explained the decision in his post match press conference.

Ryan, 34, Australia’s usual captain, had lost the number one spot just before the tournament to Beach, 22, of Melbourne City. The Levante goalkeeper, who had a 17-match spell at RC Lens in 2025, did not keep out any Egyptian attempt.

He said they thought Ryan’s experience could make the difference, and accepted that the move did not work. Popovic added that people could now look for explanations, yet the call had been made in good faith.

Popovic also defended sending a very inexperienced player to take a penalty amid the pressure of the occasion. He noted that, had it succeeded, many would be hailing an 18-year-old for stepping up and scoring.

He preferred to focus on the positives, pointing out that Australia reached the knockouts with a very young and inexperienced team. In his view, the future is promising.
