Liverpool's squad is going to undergo another revamp this summer.
Granted, a lot of their poor performances are due to the number of injuries that they've suffered but, a team of the Reds' calibre should have enough depth among their ranks to cover any gaps left by injured players.
However, since they ended the season in fifth-place with no trophies to add to their cabinet, questions have been asked as to whether it's even possible for the Anfield outfit to become title challengers after one summer window.
The 2026-27 summer transfer window was already going to be tough for Liverpool to sign all the players that they need but, since some of their stalwarts are leaving for nothing, it's just made things an awful lot more difficult.
Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson were already set to leave upon the expiry of their current deals but, the fact that Ibrahima Konate is also leaving for nothing is a tad worrying.
The 'top class' centre-back is 27 years old and, even though he hasn't been in the best run of form this term, he'd still be worth a decent chunk of change if he had a couple of years on his contract.
And, even though Liverpool and Konate have been in talks to extend his stay for over a year, the two parties couldn't come to an agreement which means that he's going to be leaving for nothing, much like Trent Alexander-Arnold did last term.
This is a massive blow for Liverpool, especially since their defence was already fairly weak before this news emerged.
And, now that Konate is available for nothing, the interest of several clubs have emerged with FC Inter News confirming that a Inter Milan have contacted his agents about a potential move.
"Now the French international has also chosen to move on, and considering that Inter are looking for a defender with exactly those characteristics ( Piero Ausilio has liked the player since his time at at Leipzig),"they wrote.
"FcInterNews.it has learned, an initial survey has already been conducted with his entourage.
It's a shame, however, that the figures on the table to convince him to sign a new contract are too high between salary and commissions, they're going well beyond the limits.
"Viale della Liberazione has reasonably imposed on itself to maintain sustainability.
"And unless Konaté's demands are lowered in the meantime, the Nerazzurri club can't initiate any discussions for now and must necessarily wait."
Alongside Konate, the future of Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi has been well-discussed.
The Argentinian centre-back has been the Cherries' leader ever since he joined them four years ago.
And, even though most of his defensive partners were taken away from him during the summer, he still managed to get Bournemouth into the Europa League.
Liverpool and Tottenham were the two teams most-linked with a move for him but, since it took the Reds so long to figure out Konate's situation, the defender looks set to join Spurs and help them with their rebuild.
This means that the best free agent option to replace Konate is gone and, now, if Liverpool do end up wanting to replace him, they'll have to fork out a pretty penny for someone such as Nico Schlotterbeck.
Of course, this would be a good move in itself but, with the number of positions the Reds need to strengthen, getting a free first-team signing over the line would have helped massively.
If Richard Hughes leaves his business until the dying embers of the window again, it could be fatal for their chances to compete for the Premier League title.
Here's hoping that Liverpool get themselves into gear and start making moves for the player they need.
