Atletico Madrid could reportedly be set to sell Julian Alvarez this summer in order to fund a move to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

That’s according to what a top source has told Chelsea transfer news expert Simon Phillips, and it could be a big boost for Arsenal.

While it’s not guaranteed for now that Atletico will sell Alvarez to Arsenal, it could still be encouraging for the Gunners that a player they’re targeting may end up being available due to the Spanish giants’ desire to fund a move for Fernandez.

As we’ve reported, Alvarez is a target for Arsenal, even if it’s far from a straightforward deal, so they’ll surely be keeping an eye on developments here.

If Fernandez is open to leaving Stamford Bridge to link up with Diego Simeone, then that really could help move things with Alvarez and Arsenal along.

Enzo Fernandez’s Chelsea future in doubt

Fernandez’s Chelsea future has looked in doubt for some time, though Real Madrid recently publicly ruled themselves out of the running for the Argentina international’s signature.

One imagines he’ll have other suitors, though, and a move to Atletico could also be seen as a tempting step up for him after last season’s frustrating campaign at Chelsea.

Phillips also mentions that CFC could go back in for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, who could be ideal as a replacement for Fernandez.

How realistic is Julian Alvarez to Arsenal?

The jury is still out on this, as Alvarez surely looks too expensive for Arsenal, while Atletico have also spoken publicly about how much they don’t want to let the 26-year-old go.

Still, if they’re really keen on Fernandez then that would probably require a major sale, and it could suit them if Alvarez moves to Arsenal rather than to their La Liga rivals Barcelona.

Arsenal could also really do with a statement signing like Alvarez after Chelsea beat them to Morgan Rogers, as officially announced yesterday.
