The 18-year-old Guinean prodigy has emerged as one of this summer’s most sought-after young talents, setting up a direct battle between two London rivals.
Diabate has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past year. After developing at the SOAR Academy in Conakry, the young midfielder gained local recognition before moving to Turkey with Genclerbirligi.
Despite his age, his positional discipline and press-resistant passing quickly earned him a place in the Turkish club’s first team in the second half of last season, including a start in the Turkish Cup final. His impressive displays also earned him a first senior cap for Guinea in June.
Tottenham have been closely tracking the young midfielder, viewing his physical attributes as an ideal fit for Roberto De Zerbi’s system.
The Spurs board are willing to meet Genclerbirligi’s financial demands to strengthen their midfield options for the future.
However, with a crowded senior squad, Spurs cannot guarantee Diabate immediate first-team football, a significant obstacle in negotiations.
This has opened a clear pathway for Brentford, who now appear to be Diabate’s most likely destination. The Bees have built a reputation for providing a clear route to Premier League football for top young talent.
Recognising the opportunity, Brentford have moved quickly to progress talks with Diabate’s representatives.
The Gtech Community Stadium hierarchy can offer an accelerated first-team integration plan, a key factor for the player’s camp.
While Tottenham may have greater financial leverage, Brentford’s track record with developing young players gives them a decisive advantage.
