Tottenham have confirmed the appointment of Igor Tudor as interim head coach until the end of the season.

It comes after Tottenham sacked Thomas Frank as head coach on Wednesday after defeat to Newcastle left them 16th in the Premier League table and just five points off the relegation zone.

Spurs reached an agreement on Friday for the Croatian to take charge of the club until the summer, when a permanent head coach will then be appointed.

A Tottenham statement reads: “We are pleased to confirm the appointment of Igor Tudor as Men’s Head Coach until the end of the season, subject to work permit.

“Igor joins us with a clear focus: to improve performances, deliver results and move us up the Premier League table.

“His mandate is straightforward – bring organisation, intensity and competitive edge to the squad at a decisive stage of the campaign.”

Upon accepting the interim head coach role, Tudor - who is expected to take Tottenham training for the first time on Monday - said: “It is an honour to join this Club at an important moment.

“I understand the responsibility I have been handed and my focus is clear. To bring greater consistency to our performances and compete with conviction in every match.

“There is strong quality in this playing squad, and my job is to organise it, energise it and improve our results quickly.”

Standard Sport understands Tudor will be a candidate for the full-time role if he does well between now and the end of the season, but it appears likelier that they will look elsewhere for the permanent appointment in the summer - with ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino tipped by some for a romantic return to the club.
