Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt another injury setback with Destiny Udogie ruled out for around a month with a hamstring problem, according to The Athletic.
The Spurs left-back sustained the injury during their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, pulling up in the second half before limping off.
Udogie, who has endured a stop-start campaign with Tottenham due to fitness issues, is now expected to miss at least four to five weeks.
His injury further depletes Thomas Frank’s defensive options at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during a demanding period.
The 23-year-old, who is blessed with ‘outstanding attributes’, has struggled for continuity this season, having already missed time with both knee and hamstring issues.
Udogie has started just eight Premier League matches and made 13 appearances in all competitions, with Spurs carefully managing his workload to improve his durability.
Frank confirmed the latest setback ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Newcastle United, admitting the club must take a holistic approach to the full-back’s recovery.
Meanwhile, Spurs could receive a boost with Djed Spence nearing a return from a calf injury, offering potential cover at left-back.
However, Spence may also be required on the opposite flank with Pedro Porro currently unavailable.
Tottenham have an extensive injury list, with Dejan Kulusevski awaiting specialist consultation over his knee problem, while Kevin Danso is still weeks away from returning from a foot injury.
James Maddison, Richarlison, Lucas Bergvall, Ben Davies, Mohammed Kudus and Rodrigo Bentancur are also sidelined, and captain Cristian Romero begins a four-match suspension.
With Spurs stretched defensively, Frank may be forced to trust in 19-year-old full-back Souza, who made his debut after arriving from Santos in January.
The Brazilian is still new to the Premier League, but his development may have to be fast-tracked. He showed some promising signs offensively on his debut over the weekend.
Souza’s introduction comes at a daunting moment, with Tottenham facing Newcastle, Liverpool, Arsenal and Crystal Palace in quick succession.
The teenager’s ability to cope with the physical and tactical demands of the Premier League could prove crucial as Spurs navigate a testing run of fixtures.
