In a recent interview with TBR Football, journalist Graeme Bailey revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have been offered a chance to sign AC Milan winger Rafael Leao. Bailey said,

“My understanding is that intermediaries on the back of Son’s transfer and Maddison’s injury have put Leao to Spurs, in theory. Opportunistic, yes, but that is how some of the biggest deals in the world have come about.

“However, I have spoken to Milan, and nothing is happening. They do have a new manager, but I am told that even though Massimiliano Allegri has just come through the door, he is firm on his stance that Leao stays.

“Allegri signed off on the sale of Tijjani Reijnders, so that meant he could have a say in other big decisions, like going for Dusan Vlahovic, but also keeping the likes of Pulisic and Leao.

“I am told that Allegri has informed Milan’s hierarchy that he can turn Leao into one of the very best forwards in the world. They are not planning on losing him, and I don’t believe Leao has the wish to leave at this point; he is excited by Allegri.”

Leao’s Impressive Form In Italian Football

Leao enjoyed a decent run of form at the Milan club in the previous campaign as he put in a run of eye-catching displays for them in Serie A. The Portuguese talent participated in 50 matches for AC Milan last season, scoring 12 goals and securing 13 assists in multiple competitions.

The 26-year-old deserves some credit for averaging 2.56 shots per 90 minutes in Serie A football. He kept 43.9% of his attempts on target. Leao even distributed the ball relatively well, based on his pass success rate of 74.2% in the Italian top tier (stats via fbref.com).

Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank Move In For Leao?

Leao has got the pace to cause a lot of headaches for his marker out in the wide areas. He has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the final third. He is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals up top.

The Portugal international is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also operate as a centre-forward if told to do so. However, there are some question marks over whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League.

Leao would bring more firepower to Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank’s attack. He is good enough to secure regular first-team football at the North London club next season.

At 26, Leao has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a decent choice for Spurs to consider in this transfer window. Thus, Frank would be wise to move in for him soon.
