Tottenham Hotspur have submitted an offer to sign Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke, which falls short of Brighton’s valuation, and discussions are ongoing.

Van Hecke has a close relationship with Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi after working together at Brighton from 2022 to 2024. In April, Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler expected to speak with the Dutchman about his future and his contract runs until June 2027. According to The Athletic, he has so far shown no interest in extending and is among three Brighton players, alongside compatriot Bart Verbruggen and midfielder Carlos Baleba, who could be sold this summer.

The 25-year-old has been named in the Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup. He played 87 minutes of Wednesday’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Algeria in Rotterdam and has 11 caps.

The centre-back joined Brighton in 2020 from NAC Breda. He spent loans at Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers before establishing himself in the first team in 2022-23. He has made 131 appearances for Brighton, including 106 in the Premier League.

Last season he was a regular under Hurzeler, starting 36 Premier League matches and missing only two through injury.

In a separate move, Tottenham are set to sign Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi on a four-year deal. The 29-year-old’s contract expires this summer and he is expected to complete a switch to north London.
