Champions League football returns to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday as Spurs host Villarreal in their opening group stage match.
The fixture presents a fascinating clash of historical records. Tottenham have a dreadful record against Spanish opposition, with just one win in their last 13 European games.
Conversely, Villarreal have never beaten an English team in the Champions League in 14 attempts. Both clubs are making a return to Europe’s elite competition and will be desperate to start with a positive result.
Thomas Frank faces significant selection challenges. He is without long-term absentees James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski. His options are further limited as Yves Bissouma and Mathys Tel were not included in the Champions League squad. Furthermore, striker Dominic Solanke is a major doubt with an ankle injury.
Manager Marcelino is dealing with a defensive injury crisis, with Logan Costa, Pau Cabanes, and Willy Kambwala all sidelined. Star forward Gerard Moreno is also a doubt. The visitors also face a quick turnaround, having played a demanding La Liga match against Atlético Madrid on Sunday evening.
Spurs are in excellent form, sitting third in the Premier League after a convincing 3-0 derby win over West Ham at the weekend. That victory was the perfect response to their first defeat of the season before the international break. Furthermore, their home ground is a fortress in Europe, as they are unbeaten in their last 20 UEFA competition games there.
The Yellow Submarine have had a mixed start to their domestic campaign. After winning their opening two games, they have taken just one point from their last two, including a 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid on Sunday. Their record against English teams in this competition is a major concern, having lost their last seven consecutive encounters.
Tottenham Hotspur predicted XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Bentancur, Bergvall; Kudus, Richarlison, Simons.
Villarreal predicted XI: Luiz Júnior; Mourino, Foyth, Veiga, Cardona; Partey, Parejo, Moleiro; Buchanan, Pepe; Mikautadze.
The match will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, with coverage beginning at 7:30 pm BST.
