Tottenham Hotspur are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market as preparations continue for a new era under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
According to Portuguese news outlet Record, Tottenham are now seriously considering a move for Sporting CP left-back Maximiliano Araujo.
The transfer window doesn’t officially open until July 1, but Tottenham have already moved quickly to bolster the squad by bringing in two new defenders.
Spurs have brought in Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi and are now determined to keep that momentum going by keeping tabs on several other targets.
Tottenham may need to sanction a few exits to free up space for fresh recruits, but they’re focused on providing De Zerbi with the depth and quality he needs to compete next season.
Spurs have now switched their attention to Araujo, although any move for the 26-year-old will be complicated as Sporting consider him a key asset.
Araujo has been a key player for Sporting over the past couple of years, and his versatility has become a game-changer for the Portuguese giants.
Comfortable both as a left-back and as a more advanced winger, the Uruguayan offers the kind of tactical flexibility that modern coaches like De Zerbi highly value.
The defender notched seven goals and six assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. He also created four big chances while averaging 1.1 key passes per 90 minutes.
Tottenham have their work cut out in the race for Araujo, with Record claiming the player is receiving ‘special attention’ from other clubs across Europe.
Spurs will need to move quickly to steal a march on other interested clubs, with Manchester United, Chelsea, and Atletico Madrid also keeping an eye on his situation.
Sporting are heavily reluctant to lose Araujo this summer and are prepared to offer him a new contract with a bumper pay rise to ward off growing interest.
However, the defender is in no rush to make a decision about his long-term future and will only revisit the situation after the World Cup.
