The Lilywhites fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat against London rivals Chelsea last time out, meaning they’ve taken just one point from their last four games. That’s left Spurs 14th in the Premier League table, closer to the bottom three (14 points) than the top six (16 points).

Radu Dragusin is out for the season, while we’re not likely to see Dejan Kulusevski, Kevin Danso or Richarlison until later this month.

Pape Sarr and Brennan Johnson replaced Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert in the 64th minute against Chelsea, while Pedro Porro came off the bench toward the end, and it should be expected that all three will come into the starting line-up here.

You can usually bet on James Maddison being dropped back to the bench with regularity, but given how poor Southampton have been this season, Ange Postecoglou may look to unleash the Englishman as part of an attacking Spurs line-up.

Postecoglou will also hope this game serves as a catalyst for Dominic Solanke and Son Heung-min, who have both been struggling for goals.

Can Spurs use Saints tie to set up Europa League push?

According to Sky Bet, Ange Postecoglou is the 2/1 second-favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his current club, behind only Ruud van Nistelrooy (11/10).

That’s hardly surprising, given Spurs are languishing in 14th with just 34 points and 10 wins from 30 games. In fact, only the bottom three have lost more games than the Lilywhites (16) this season, with many believing Ange should have been ousted from his job long ago.

The only reason the Australian still mans the dugout is Tottenham’s run to the Europa League quarter-finals. Spurs finished fourth in the league phase with just one defeat from eight games, then came from behind to beat AZ Alkmaar 3-2 on aggregate.

Next up is the first leg against German side and winners of the 2022 competition, Eintracht Frankfurt, which comes straight off the back of this Southampton clash.

At the time of writing, Frankfurt have won their last three competitive matches and sit third in the Bundesliga, behind only runaway top two Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen. In short, this is not going to be an easy tie, and you can make a very good case for Spurs being underdogs.

Postecoglou will be hoping, then, that his side come through this Saints match not only unscathed, but with a performance and result that can inspire confidence ahead of a continental clash that could make or break his job prospects.
