Thomas Frank has called on Rodrigo Bentancur to produce his best football more consistently for Tottenham after signing a new contract.
Bentancur has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal, ending any speculation over his future. The 28-year-old would have been out of contract next summer.
Frank has spoken highly of Bentancur since he took charge at Spurs in the summer and was keen for the Uruguayan to agree a new deal.
The win over West Ham immediately after the last international break was the only match Bentancur has not played in this season.
However, Frank made it clear that he wants more from the midfielder, particularly in games where Spurs are struggling.
“I think one thing I have seen, I am very happy with him as a player and as a character," Frank said.
"I think when he plays at his best level, he is a top level as a midfielder here in the Premier League and I probably need to see a little bit more consistency there.
"I also want him to, and I told him myself, I want him to a little bit more dictate the game and get on the ball when it’s tough because he’s so good on the ball.
"He is so composed and so good to get the ball in tight areas and get out of situations. That I would like to see a little bit more, so I think that is the first bit and he can easily add goals to the game, but the more we can control the middle of the pitch with him, the better."
Bentancur follows Spurs captain Cristian Romero in committing his future to the club and Frank believes it is evidence that the team are on the right path.
"It's fantastic news that the club have managed to first extend Romero's contract, but now also Rodri Bentancur's contract," Frank said.
"I think that's a big sign that both of them believe in the project and the future here and hopefully the fantastic journey we are going to be on together. I think that's a big, big signal.
"It would be the easiest thing in the world for Rodri to run out his contract and do something different. So I think that's a fantastic signal to the fans, to everyone."
