Manchester United are set to submit a formal offer for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes (21), with The Athletic confirming the Reds are prepared to move closer to West Ham’s £80 million valuation – a figure INEOS has treated as a fundamental sticking point throughout weeks of protracted negotiations. Personal terms between United and the one-cap Portugal international are not expected to be an issue, and Fernandes himself views a move to Old Trafford as a dream outcome, with Bruno Fernandes a personal idol he would relish the chance to play alongside.
Fernandes made 36 Premier League appearances for West Ham in 2025/26, averaging 84 minutes per game as the Hammers were relegated, contributing seven goals and assists across the campaign. He is not a player who needs the caveats of promise and potential – he has already demonstrated the two-way midfield profile United have been chasing since it became clear Casemiro would depart for Inter Miami.

The Athletic reports that United have not yet tabled a formal bid but are expected to do so, with the club internally confident they lead the race. West Ham’s position has hardened since relegation – rather than forcing a distressed sale, a change of ownership at the London Stadium has given the club the financial breathing room to hold firm at £80 million. Fabrizio Romano has reported that West Ham’s ideal figure sat closer to £100 million, though the expectation in the market is that a deal would close around £85 million at a minimum.
There is a meaningful gap between that floor and where INEOS currently stands. The Athletic describes the asking price as a “fundamental sticking point” for United’s hierarchy, who have shown reluctance to commit at that level for a player with two years of English football behind him. The contrast with the £39 million spent on Atalanta’s Ederson – a more experienced option acquired as a versatile midfield addition – is not lost on those tracking United’s summer spend.
Tottenham Hotspur have entered the picture at the direct request of head coach Roberto De Zerbi, and their approach has been anything but token. Spurs held talks with Fernandes’ camp, led by super agent Jorge Mendes, and received encouragement that he would be willing to move across London. If Tottenham are prepared to meet West Ham’s £80 million valuation – and The Athletic indicates that is a genuine possibility – sporting director Jason Wilcox will be “left with a decision to make.”
It is a scenario United know well. Tottenham’s willingness to meet the £80m asking price has already sharpened the timeline considerably. The Reds have already watched Elliot Anderson (23) slip away to Manchester City; losing a second midfield priority to a domestic rival in the same window would represent a significant failure of execution, regardless of how disciplined the underlying financial logic might appear.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, PSG, and Real Madrid have all been credited with interest, though it is United and Spurs who have moved with genuine intent. Fernandes’ preference for Old Trafford is the clearest card in United’s hand – The Athletic notes personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle, and multiple outlets describe his desire for the move as unambiguous.
Casemiro’s departure resolves one question and opens several others. Aurelien Tchouameni remains the preferred profile to fill that holding role, but a deal with Real Madrid is considered unlikely at this stage. Fernandes occupies a different position in United’s thinking – more dynamic, more progressive, capable of functioning across multiple midfield roles rather than anchoring defensively.
His 2025/26 numbers bear that out. The table below shows the full picture from his campaign at West Ham.
Those defensive metrics alongside the creative output are precisely why United’s scouts have prioritised him above the other candidates assessed this summer – Alex Scott, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton among them. United’s talks with West Ham stretching back to earlier this month reflect how long he has been a genuine target rather than a late pivot.
West Ham’s need to balance their books before the end of the month may be working in United’s favour, giving Wilcox’s team the patience to avoid a bidding war while knowing the clock is ticking on the Hammers’ side too. A formal offer is expected imminently. Southampton’s 15% sell-on clause – a legacy of the £38 million deal that took Fernandes to east London last summer – means West Ham will want a clean, high fee rather than a heavily structured one.
It remains to be seen whether INEOS move quickly enough to capitalise on Fernandes’ clear preference for United, or whether their resistance to West Ham’s valuation gives Tottenham the opening to act decisively and end the pursuit on Spurs’ terms.
