Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus has suffered a recovery setback and now looks likely to miss Leeds United’s six-pointer at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 11 May.

The club said in a statement that the Ghana international sustained a significant quadriceps injury against Sunderland in January and had briefly returned to team training last week. He has suffered a setback and now needs further specialist review, which could include surgery, with updates to follow.

Kudus has not featured since the 1-1 draw on 4 January. Tottenham have failed to win a Premier League game without their £55million summer signing, leaving them one point above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining. He had been pencilled in for a return after the March international break.

He was a menace in October’s 2-1 win at Elland Road, creating Mathys Tel’s opener before pouncing on a Gabriel Gudmundsson slip to score the winner.

Leeds have injury concerns of their own after Anton Stach and Joe Rodon sustained ankle ligament damage at West Ham last weekend. The pair are expected to be out through April, though Daniel Farke has expressed some hope his medical staff can quicken their recovery.

Barring setbacks, Stach and Rodon will aim to be available for the mid-May trip to North London. Before then, the Whites host Burnley and Wolves as they look to stay within touching distance of safety.
