FC Bayern have had to chase a deficit several times recently – now coach Vincent Kompany has commented on the current development. His statements make it clear that he is taking the situation seriously and is monitoring developments closely.

The German record champions have fallen behind early in each of their last four competitive matches. At the press conference ahead of the DFB Cup match against Union Berlin, Kompany said: „We started the season by scoring three goals in the first twenty minutes. It was to be expected that this would change. But falling behind is something we are working on and focusing more on.“

He continued: „I still think it’s normal circumstances, but if it becomes a pattern, we need to work on breaking that.“

Against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, the score was 0-1 after 27 minutes, with Bayern trailing again in between before Harry Kane secured a 2-2 draw in stoppage time. Against Freiburg, the score was 0-2 after 17 minutes, with Bayern ultimately winning 6-2. This was followed by a 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in the Champions League and another early goal against St. Pauli – after just six minutes. „But in the last twenty games, we’ve usually led 3-0 after twenty minutes; that’s been the case much more often,“ said Kompany. But this time in the cup against the Köpenickers, the aim is to avoid going behind early.

Vincent Kompany also commented on the personnel for the cup match against Union Berlin. As Kompany explained, Alphonso Davies is not yet ready for a place in the squad: „It won’t be enough for Alphonso Davies in this match. Everyone is healthy, the squad looks good. But it’s winter, sometimes someone has a cold – but no big stories.“

Looking ahead to the clash with Union Berlin, Kompany warned of the opponents: „It’s a knockout game against a physically big team. Union will be hoping to have their moment.“ The last clash in the Bundesliga remains a benchmark for him: „We can do again what we showed in the last five minutes against Union. We’ve now done that against St. Pauli.“

He leaves no doubt about Munich’s goal: „We want to put in a good performance and win – we’re prepared for anything, for 90 minutes or 30 more.“ He added: „Of course I want to go back to Berlin after the game, of course.“
