FC Bayern are keeping a close eye on the transfer market and one name keeps coming up internally: Alejandro Grimaldo. The Bayer Leverkusen left-back is one of the most consistent players in the Bundesliga and has caught the eye of the German record champions with his strong performances. Now new details have emerged regarding the Spaniard’s potential price tag.
While reports recently made the rounds that Leverkusen were demanding „well over ten million euros“, BILD reporters Christian Falk and Tobias Altschäffl have now provided clarity in the „Bayern Insider“ podcast: the transfer fee is likely to be in the region of around 20 million euros. A sum that seems quite crisp in view of Grimaldo’s age and the length of his contract – but certainly feasible for FC Bayern.
Grimaldo still has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2027, so if FC Bayern were to make a move next summer, the left-back would be in the final year of his contract – normally a phase in which players tend to be cheaper.
However, Bayern insiders provide a plausible explanation as to why the demand is still significantly higher than the expected sum: The relationship between Bayern and Leverkusen remains tense following the transfer of Jonathan Tah.
Tah did not extend his contract with Bayer and joined FC Bayern on a free transfer in the summer – a move that caused little enthusiasm in Leverkusen. In addition, Bayer demanded an extra payment to make Tah immediately eligible to play in the Club World Cup.
Now the works club could deliberately take a tougher stance on a potential Grimaldo transfer, meaning that the reported €20 million is not only justifiable from a sporting point of view, but can also be understood strategically.
FC Bayern are consistently pursuing their personnel strategy for the coming season. There will probably be changes at left-back – and Grimaldo could be a logical piece of the puzzle.
Raphaël Guerreiro is set to leave. The Portuguese’s contract expires in the summer and, as reported several times, Bayern are planning without him.
Alphonso Davies will resume his regular position at left-back after his long injury lay-off, but in view of his attacking quality, there are internal considerations to give the Canadian more freedom up front again – as was the case before his retraining.
This is where Grimaldo comes into play: he would be an additional backup for the left side and could allow Davies to operate more offensively. He also brings a lot of experience, goal-scoring ability and intelligence to the table.
A transfer would be economically feasible for Bayern. According to BILD, Grimaldo currently earns around 4.5 million euros a year. Even with a salary increase, he would be one of the „normal earners„ at the Isar.
