FC Bayern is currently experiencing another emotional rollercoaster ride in the Champions League. In a new storytelling podcast, kicker takes a look back at one of the most dramatic and emotional phases in the club’s history: the path from the final trauma of 1999 to the triumph in the top flight in 2001

The images of the 1999 Champions League final against Manchester United are still unforgotten today. FC Bayern led 1-0 until injury time, before the English team turned the game around in a matter of seconds and snatched the title from Munich’s grasp

Oliver Kahn in particular still describes the extraordinary emotional connection that such moments create within a team

„It’s like an invisible bond. You can’t describe what connects you to each other, you can’t even explain it. But you feel a relationship somewhere with the person you experienced it with,“ explains the Bayern legend in the new podcast „Trauma & Triumph – FC Bayern and its resurrection“

As reported by kicker, the six-part storytelling podcast recounts the record champions‘ eventful journey from their dramatic failure in 1999 to their Champions League victory in 2001 – with numerous previously unknown stories and exclusive insights behind the scenes

Host Felix Kneidl sheds light on what is probably the most emotional phase in modern Bayern history and travels back to a time „when the players‘ soccer boots were still predominantly black, streaming services did not yet exist and protagonists such as Effenberg and Mario Basler regularly made headlines.“

In addition to Oliver Kahn, numerous other protagonists of that legendary Bayern generation have their say: Stefan Effenberg talks about his personal „redemption“, Ottmar Hitzfeld speaks openly about his burn-out and Patrik Andersson reveals what he actually had in mind for his legendary free-kick in Hamburg in the 2001 championship final

Referee Markus Merk also provides special insights and, according to kicker, even talks about „unusual measures“ in his dental practice after the dramatic 2000/01 season finale

Particularly exciting: not only Bayern legends have their say in the podcast, but also former rivals of the record champions, including Huub Stevens, Mike Büskens, Gerald Asamoah and Youri Mulder, who talk about the legendary „four-minute championship“ of FC Schalke 04

„If I was a neutral observer,“ says Büskens, „then I would say: this is the greatest Bundesliga final in the history of the Bundesliga.“

According to kicker, the first two episodes of the podcast will be released free of charge this Monday on kicker.de and in the kicker app. Episodes three and four will follow on May 11, with the final two parts being released on May 18 and available as part of a kicker+ subscription.
