Trevor Carson has confirmed his retirement after suffering a knee injury, just over a month after agreeing to join Queen of the South. The former Hartlepool United and Portsmouth goalkeeper is an eight-times capped Northern Ireland international.

The club said in a statement that the 38-year-old, who was manager Nicky Clark’s first signing, has decided to retire due to a knee injury sustained during preparations for the new League One season. After a tough pre-season he could not guarantee his fitness for the full campaign and informed the manager to step aside to allow time to source a replacement, with the club calling it a major blow and praising his honesty.

Carson began his career at Sunderland and gained senior experience on loan at Chesterfield, Lincoln City and Hull City. He left the Black Cats without a senior appearance in the summer of 2012, then joined Cheltenham Town before moving to Hartlepool three years later.

He helped Pools reach the FA Cup third round in 2016, when they lost 2-1 at home to Derby County, whose side included former Sunderland and England striker Darren Bent and Austria international Andi Weimann. He made 63 appearances across two seasons at Victoria Park before heading to Motherwell.

He stayed in Scotland with Dundee United, St Mirren, Ross County and Dundee.
