England boss Thomas Tuchel has issued a fantastic update about the prospects of Manchester United trio Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire.
United have reached new heights since Ruben Amorim’s departure and Michael Carrick’s installation as interim head coach.
Carrick has overseen five Premier League games, winning four and drawing one. Several players have improved, including the England trio of Mainoo, Shaw and Maguire.
Mainoo has undoubtedly emerged as the primary beneficiary of Amorim’s dismissal. Marginalised and languishing at the foot of the pecking order under the Portuguese, Mainoo has now started all five games under Carrick, making key contributions in each.
Shaw and Maguire have played their part too, anchoring a settled United defence that also features Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot.
There have been growing calls for Mainoo, Shaw and Maguire to be considered for a return to the England squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup, and Tuchel has confirmed that they are firmly in contention to be called up.
Tuchel said about Mainoo [as quoted by The Athletic], “It is great that he is back on the pitch.”
“He is such a huge talent. He has played already a tournament from start to finish for England, so he is back in the picture, so is Luke Shaw, and so is Harry (Maguire).”
Tuchel added, “There are some players suddenly back in the picture, they play a back four now and play with a different style, which is a bit easier to translate to our structure at the moment. It’s good competition.”
All 10 of Mainoo’s international appearances for England came in 2024, during his breakout campaign.
Neither Maguire nor Shaw have played under Tuchel yet. Shaw’s most recent appearance for England remains the Euro 2024 final loss to Spain.
Meanwhile, United return to action on February 23 when they go away to Everton.
