Thomas Tuchel has just overseen his maiden international break as England boss, comfortably winning two matches without conceding a goal.

Manchester United had some representation in the camp through loanee Marcus Rashford being called up. However, for only the second time since 1976, there were no current Reds in the Three Lions setup.

You could argue that it’s only due to injuries, as Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire had previously become regulars under Gareth Southgate – particularly the latter, who was easily one of the ex-manager’s most trusted lieutenants.

Both players will be vying to reclaim their spots by impressing when they return to action, though it remains to be seen when exactly that will be.

What Tuchel has said about Maguire’s absence

Maguire’s absence opened the door for young prospect Ayden Heaven to stake a claim for a starting spot, as well as the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans and Leny Yoro being sidelined. When club training resumes in the coming days, fans are hoping to see several returnees taking to the turf at Carrington.

Leading up to his contract expiry at the end of June, Maguire is one Red who faced a largely uncertain Old Trafford future. Then, the club confirmed they’d trigger the one-year option in his terms, and reports have even suggested he may be offered a new deal entirely, having generally impressed Ruben Amorim thus far.

He has slotted into the back-three change seamlessly, and while that’s proven ideal for the Portuguese coach, Tuchel may have some qualms over the positional shift.

When pressed on Maguire’s absence from the squad recently, Tuchel told reporters (as cited by UtdDistrict): “He was not fit when we did the nomination.

“It was presumed that he could play, but I didn’t want to take the risk to nominate a player which we have to take care of in the first training, and second training and constantly need to assess if he can do full training sessions or half training sessions.

“Harry knows that. It’s not so easy at the moment for him in the club. He plays in a back three on top of it, but listen, he’s a top professional. He’s very important. He was very important for England.

“He took it unbelievably well. He wrote me messages to wish us good luck, so you see what a person he is, a top guy. He will always be in contention.”
