After a complicated start to 2025, Mike Maignan is back to his best and this is helpful in his mission to earn a renewal with AC Milan.

As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) recall this morning, the mistakes he made against Cagliari, Como and Feyenoord – to name a few – were followed by decisive stops that allowed Milan to bring home some big victories and results.

Suffice it to say that the Frenchman also had a hand in the Coppa Italia semi-final win against Inter, who around the hour mark extinguished the Nerazzurri’s hopes of a comeback with a crazy reaction save on Stefan De Vrij’s header.

Resurgence and renewal?

Maignan has therefore managed to learn from his difficulties and get back up as only a champion can do. But it couldn’t have been otherwise, also because we are still talking about the captain of Milan.

Sergio Conceiçao wanted to entrust him with the captain’s armband upon his arrival, with the club’s approval, thus confirming the importance that the Frenchman has within the Rossoneri dressing room.

The feeling is that it will be for some time to come, given that at the end of this season Milan should return to the negotiating table with Maignan to discuss his renewal. In June, his contract will have just one year to run.

In recent months, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada have spoken of parties being very close to an extension. A verbal agreement been there for some time, with a new deadline of 2029 and a salary increase to €5m net per season.

However, it is a deal that still needs to be signed off by the club and the player who, over the weeks, have essentially put the agreement on standby, especially after Maignan’s less than stellar start to the year.

At the end of the season the dossier should be reopened. The CEO Furlani wanted to share the decision with the potential new sporting director, but the prolongation of the times – also due to the Coppa Italia final in the middle – could lead him to complete it regardless.
