Leeds United face a pivotal summer after an impressive 14th-placed finish on their Premier League return, with the window opening tomorrow. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, attacking reinforcements are the priority and chairman Paraag Marathe has said the bar is higher for arrivals, with fewer additions but of genuine difference-making quality.
Sales are also on the cards and Daniel Farke’s forward line could look different by kick-off. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a straightforward keep after a free move last summer yielded 14 goals, and a full pre-season should help, though competition is still required.
Lukas Nmecha is another keep after an effective free transfer and six Premier League goals. He did struggle at times with hold-up demands, but as a potential third-choice option he remains worthwhile.
Joel Piroe is earmarked to sell. He did not start a league game after August and failed to score, with Leeds’ shift towards greater physicality not suiting him. A move would be needed for regular football and could bring in around £10-15m.
The 17-year-old Harry Gray impressed on loan at Rotherham and needs more senior minutes. That is unlikely to come at Elland Road, so another loan, potentially stepping up to the upper end of League One or lower Championship, makes sense.
Mateo Joseph’s Mallorca loan was cut short by an ACL injury and rehabilitation is already under way at Leeds. A January move could be revisited if he is fit. Leeds also need to sign a top-level striker to push Calvert-Lewin, with Jorgen Strand Larsen a placeholder name after recent interest. They were prepared to commit close to £40m in January and may need to do similar now.
