According to Sunderland Echo, Coventry City are ‘ready to fight’ Ipswich Town for Dan Neil, who is nearing the end of his Sunderland contract, a move that could see him return to Wearside with a new club next season.

The Academy of Light graduate joined Ipswich on loan in the final days of the January window and has made nine appearances as Kieran McKenna’s team chase promotion at the first attempt.

Coventry are also keen and are said to see the 24-year-old as someone who could help them re-establish themselves in the Premier League after 25 years away. Frank Lampard’s side lead the Championship, nine points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough with seven games left, and hold a significant goal-difference advantage over Kim Hellberg’s men.

The Sky Blues are described as major admirers and hope to bring Neil to the CBS Arena this summer as they plan ahead.

Neil has spoken of his surprise and gratitude for the tributes from Sunderland team-mates and supporters when his exit was confirmed late in January. He admitted the decision was difficult but said he quickly made peace with starting a new chapter, taking pride in helping the club back to where he felt it belonged while noting the current side are doing very well.
