Real Sociedad’s colours are binding Basque communities across the Americas ahead of Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Atlético de Madrid at La Cartuja in Sevilla. According to AS, Boise’s official supporters’ club Txuriurdin Amerikanuak has asked Euskal Etxeak to turn their venues into txuri-urdin embassies.

President Haritz Maillo sees the occasion as the payoff for years of work since relegation. He has arranged leave to travel with his wife, has faith the result will be positive and that the Cup will head to Gipuzkoa, yet wants a celebration uniting Basques at home and abroad.

For Maillo, simply being inside the stadium is a privilege after waiting since 87. In Argentina, Mateo Tacconi will watch at the local Basque centre, saying La Real’s pull fuses with Argentine passion and connects him to family from Idiazabal now in Donostia.

In Trujillo, Peru, Wilfredo Lizarzuru treasures memories of Arconada, Satrustegi and the diminutive López Ufarte from the late 70s. With roots in Lizarza, he plans to follow the final at the city’s Basque centre and takes pride in a team he sees as a symbol of Gipuzkoa and identity.

From Mexico, Chile and Bolivia to Uruguay and Chicago, the txuri-urdin diaspora is moving as one, with nerves turning into excitement. When the ball rolls, thousands across time zones will watch, and Real Sociedad will play for travellers and for Basques and realistas worldwide who see a piece of home.
