Olympique Lyon, one of French soccer’s most deep-rooted sides, are back on the Champions League pathway. At the time of publication they sit in 5th place, only two points from 3rd and automatic qualification. One big factor in this resurgence is a “quiet but profound” figure in the center.
Tyler Morton, who joined the squad in August from Liverpool for $12M, has entered the radar of not only Ligue 1 but also Europe’s most elite clubs with his “regista” performance. The 23-year-old, currently enjoying the most productive season of his career, is a candidate to be one of the most talked-about names in the summer 2026 transfer window.
Morton is a product of the Liverpool Academy who served as a rotation player in their Premier League title-winning squad. His move to France was spurred by a desire for regular first-team minutes. In that respect, he succeeded.
He’s made 38 appearances across all competitions for Lyon this season. More importantly, the young star has become the “brain” of the team with an 89% pass accuracy rate in the build-up phase, far beyond his contribution of 2 goals and 3 assists.
The Lyon management and technical staff view themselves in a highly profitable position regarding Morton.
From a sporting perspective, Lyon has absolutely no desire to sell the player. However, considering the club’s past financial bottlenecks and league restrictions, it’s well known that they will head to the bargaining table should an “unmissable” offer arrive.
With performance add-ons, Morton’s summer move cost $18M. Lyon is expected to open the door in the $41-47M range and will not compromise in negotiations as they seek to maximize their net profit.
Lyon would use the potentially massive revenue from a Morton sale as primary capital for 2-3 “star” reinforcements to add into the attacking line, in accordance with their plans to return to the Champions League.
Morton’s modern “number 6” profile has mobilized Europe’s giants who are suffering from a lack of a dynamo in midfield, including:
Tyler Morton’s contract with Lyon continues until June 30, 2030. This long-term contract is Lyon’s biggest trump card, allowing them to play the role of a “tough seller” at the bargaining table.
Currently earning approximately $29,000 per week, it is claimed that Morton aims to pull this figure into the $100,000-$130,000 per week bracket in the event of a “giant club” transfer.
Lyon sources protected the player by stating, “Tyler is at the center of our project; we want to work with him for many years.” Morton, meanwhile, maintained a cautious stance, saying, “I am happy at Lyon; I am only focusing on my development.”
There is a persistent story from French sources that claims PSG has made indirect contact with Morton’s agent and that the player is open to staying in the country.
