Tyrell Malacia is actively pushing to leave Manchester United before the January transfer window slams shut next week – and a new option has emerged to rescue the forgotten defender, according to a new report.
Malacia made his first appearance for the Red Devils in 13 months during the Boxing Day victory over Newcastle United.
The Dutchman spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, who went on to win the Eredivisie in a pulsating final day of the season in Holland.
But the Boeren were not convinced by the 26-year-old full-back’s performances and chose not to make the deal permanent, leading him to return to Old Trafford in June.
Malacia was then designated as part of Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’, alongside Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. They were made to train separately from the first team, while the club pursued exits for each player, with Amorim having made clear they were not wanted.
As the summer window came to a close, however, it was only Malacia who remained after a deadline day move to Spanish side Elche collapsed at the last moment.
Amorim had stressed any ‘bomb squaddies’ who remained would be reintegrated – with the defender eventually re-joining the senior squad after training with the under-21s, leading, eventually, to that rare cameo against Newcastle.
United were always expected to push for an exit this month, however, with Malacia’s contract set to expire at the end of the season. The arrival of Michael Carrick in place of Amorim has not changed this approach, with the English coach having no use for the left-back, even after the injury to Patrick Dorgu.
A return to the Netherlands is considered the most likely destination, while AS Roma, Besiktas and FC Porto were also said to be interested in a deal – but a new option has now emerged.
Dutch outlet Voetbal International reveals an unnamed Major League Soccer (MLS) club has made a “concrete” move for Malacia, according to well-placed sources.
The former Feyenoord star is “more than open” to an exit from United this week, but he requires the “cooperation” of the club’s hierarchy to facilitate a deal which is unlikely to involve a transfer fee.
However, a separate update by the same reporter indicates a potential move to Porto is “nonsense”, though the interest from Italy and Türkiye is corroborated.
Malacia is described as seeking a “solution” to his future after multiple years in the wilderness following his move to Manchester. INEOS are equally desperate to shift a player who is nothing but a drain on the wage bill, making the prospect of an exit before Monday’s deadline highly likely.
However, the transfer window in the United States remains open until March 26, meaning the offer from the MLS club functions as a “last option” should other deals not materialise.
