UEFA sanctioned Benfica on Wednesday for the racist behaviour of their supporters during the Champions League play-off first leg against Real Madrid on 17 February, which Madrid won 0-1.

UEFA confirmed it had imposed a 40,000 euros fine for racist or discriminatory conduct by supporters at that match.

A further fine of 25,000 euros was issued for objects thrown, and 8,000 euros for the use of a laser pointer. Assistant coach Pedro Machado is suspended for one match for unsporting behaviour.

The disciplinary package also includes a measure, suspended for a one-year probationary period, requiring a partial closure of Benfica’s stadium for one home game.

The same fixture also saw Vinicius accuse Gianluca Prestianni of directing racist insults at him.
