While FC Barcelona added two more trophies to their cabinet this season, i.e., La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, the Catalans were still unable to win their most desired competition, i.e., the UEFA Champions League.
The Blaugranes made their way up to the quarter-finals, where they were defeated by Atletico Madrid with a 3-2 scoreline on aggregate. The second leg at the Metropolitano ended in a 2-1 victory for Barcelona, but it was not enough to overturn the 0-2 first leg defeat at Camp Nou.
As a result of that tie, Barcelona are still dealing with the aftereffects weeks later. According to Mundo Deportivo, the UEFA Disciplinary Committee has now announced the sanctions for the quarter-final and semi-final matches in the UCL, UEL, and UECL, and the Blaugrana club has been handed a fine of €22,500.
Of this, €20,000 is due to the delayed restart of the second half against Atletico Madrid, with UEFA treating the incident as a late kick-off infringement, something the governing body tends to enforce strictly in line with broadcast and competition regulations. The remaining €2,500 comes from fireworks being set off in the Barcelona supporters section during the match.
While the amount is relatively small, it still adds to a list of avoidable disciplinary issues and serves as another reminder for Barcelona to keep tighter control over both matchday timing and supporter behaviour in European fixtures.
