And then there was one. It’s the final day of 2025’s international breaks. Cue up the fireworks and pop the champagne! Not only will the proper soccer leagues return to regular play, but we’ll know thirteen European nations heading to next year’s World Cup.

In fact, before Tuesday’s fixtures we already know some of them, including:

  • Germany (Group A) Despite concerns early last week that Germany might not qualify, a resounding 6 – 0 win over Slovakia earlier today punched their ticket. The Slovaks will enter the play-off.
  • France (Group D)
  • Portugal (Group F)
  • The Netherlands (Group G) Three goals in five minutes early in the second half gave the Dutch all they needed to cruise into the top position.
  • Norway (Group I)
  • England (Group K)
  • Croatia (Group L)

And here are the remaining games.

Kosovo vs. Switzerland (Group B)

The visitors have +11 in the goal differential column, making this match somewhat of a futile effort for Kosovo. Switzerland’s qualification is a lock as long as they avoid losing by five or more goals.

Sweden vs. Slovenia (Group B)

Graham Potter will be hoping that his second match in charge of Sweden goes better than his debut, in which they lost 4 – 1. The English coach, who’s suffered a string of disappointing positions after leaving Brighton back in 2020, will be judged by only one factor: ensuring Sweden make the World Cup through the arduous and challenging series of play-off matches in March. A convincing win over Slovenia would be a good start.

Scotland vs. Denmark (Group C)

This is what qualifying is all about: two teams battling it out on the final day, and the winner takes the prize. Or in the case of Denmark, a win or draw gives them the prize. Scotland was the architect of this dilemma, having lost to Greece 3- 2 on Saturday. Belarus and Greece will also play merely for the formality.

Spain vs. Turkey (Group E)

With a +14 goal differential in hand, Spain can afford to lose by 6 goals and still be assured of the top spot in Group E. Of course, they won’t let it happen since a shutout win would give them a perfect qualifying campaign. That’s a rare achievement. Turkey will be playing to spoil that, and to avenge their embarrassing 6 – 0 loss from September. The other two teams in the group, Georgia and Bulgaria, are also playing but have nothing at stake.

Austria vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina (Group H)

This is another nail-biting winner-take-all fixture. Austria’s slip up back on October 12, when they fell 1 – 0 to Romania, could prove costly if Bosnia pulls off a win. The Burschen are certainly favorites, particularly at home, but Bosnia are a tricky side with the same number of wins. The other group match, in which San Marino hosts Romania, is a moot point. Romania already secured a play-off spot in March via their Nations League success.

Wales vs. North Macedonia (Group J)

We have some outstanding subtext for this match. Wales can secure a play-off spot with a win, and by doing so knock North Macedonia out of the World Cup. But on the other foot, a North Macedonian win would slay the Red Dragons and also give them a shot at winning the group. But there’s a catch… Belgium would have to lose away to Liechtenstein, a team that has yet to score a goal in qualifying. It’s not likely to happen, and the best North Macedonia can ask for is a pay-off spot.
