Unai Marrero, 24, enjoyed the night every goalkeeper dreams of, stepping from Álex Remiro’s shadow to become Real Sociedad’s Copa del Rey hero. After a 2-2 comeback at Anoeta, he dominated the shootout to send La Real into the quarter-finals, with opponents to be confirmed on Monday.

Before the drama from 12 yards, the Azpeitia-born academy graduate kept Osasuna at bay during an exhausting tie. Zubeldia forced extra time with a last-gasp leveller. According to AS, Pellegrino Matarazzo had already expressed firm belief in Marrero before kick-off, describing him as different, explosive and emotional, with the capacity for big saves. In the shootout he saved from Moncayola, then denied Catena to end it.

Afterwards Marrero said he felt in his element and credited hard work. He spoke about mental preparation for penalties, studying takers, trusting his strengths and staying calm.

Marrero made his Real debut on 1 November 2023 in the Copa del Rey at Buñol under Imanol Alguacil. His first LaLiga appearance came on 2 January 2024 after Remiro was sent off.

He has played 16 times, four in LaLiga, eight in the Copa del Rey and three in the Europa League. He has started every Copa tie this season, against Negreira, Reus, Eldense and Osasuna. This level could provoke a positive selection debate for Matarazzo, who is inclined to reward strong performances in games and training.
