Germany reached the last 32 as Deniz Undav struck late, Curaçao claimed a historic first World Cup point and Tunisia went out. L'Équipe highlights the standout moments from the overnight action.
Trailing Côte d'Ivoire at half-time, Germany turned it around late to win 2-1 and book qualification. Super-sub Undav came on to score twice and complete the comeback.
Asked about a possible start against Ecuador on matchday three, Julian Nagelsmann said Undav could perhaps begin, adding that every player wants to start and he thinks the striker is happy with his current role. German fans are already calling for him to replace Leroy Sané, and he has been involved in five goals at this World Cup.
Eloy Room produced 15 saves, a World Cup record for a 90-minute match, as Curaçao held Ecuador 0-0. The Caribbean side earned their first ever point on this stage and put a dent in Ecuador’s hopes of reaching the last 32. Room was named player of the match.
Hervé Renard became only the second French coach to lead three different nations at World Cup finals, after Morocco in 2018 and Saudi Arabia in 2022. Only Henri Michel has managed four, with France in 1986, Cameroon in 1994, Morocco in 1998 and Côte d'Ivoire in 2006.
Renard’s first game with Tunisia ended in a 4-0 defeat by Japan, with the North Africans behind inside four minutes and largely outplayed, a result that confirmed elimination.
Next up overnight: Uruguay v Cape Verde at midnight, then New Zealand v Egypt at three in the morning.
