Will Boyle has yet to feature for Wrexham in League One this season.

Phil Parkinson’s side are competing for yet another promotion, having gone up in both of the last two campaigns.

The Red Dragons are in the mix for automatic promotion in the first half of this term, but players like Boyle have yet to play a role in their battle for a top two spot.

The defender joined the Welsh outfit in the summer of 2023, and made 24 appearances in League Two last season to help the team finish second in the table.

Boyle has a contract that runs until 2026, but his lack of playing time this year has called into question his future at the club.

Will Boyle transfer claim

When asked about Boyle’s lack of game time, FLW’s Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice claimed that there is simply too much competition for minutes for him to play this season.

He believes that a January move on loan to a League Two club in January could facilitate a summer departure on a permanent basis.

“Will Boyle’s been the unfortunate casualty of having a lot of depth in one position,” Grice told Football League World.

“Centre-back is probably the position where we’ve got the most players.

“When Max Cleworth is a nailed-on starter because he’s been good this season, and Lewis Brunt has recently come into the team, and played in the position that Boyle tends to play in and performed excellently, there’s really not much room for him to get in.

“And we’ve got Eoghan O’Connell and Dan Scarr vying for that central centre-back position, it really doesn’t leave much of an option for him.

“We’ve also got Tom O’Connor who can play on that left centre-back role, and we’ve got George Evans, who has yet to come back from injury.

“So, I think Will Boyle does have to leave Wrexham, maybe on loan to a League Two club, build up some of his form and we should maybe cash in in the summer.”

Wrexham’s promotion ambitions

Wrexham gained promotion from League Two at the first time of asking last year, and are now aiming to do the same this season.

The Red Dragons are currently second in the table, although Parkinson’s side have played more games than the likes of Birmingham City.

The team have earned 34 points from their opening 17 games, and are four points behind leaders Wycombe Wanderers, who have only played 16 times.

Boyle has yet to feature for the club at this level, and could even be a January departure if this level of playing time continues.

Will Boyle is a victim of Wrexham’s quick success

Wrexham were always going to have some players that would get left behind given how quickly their rise has been.

Boyle finds himself on the outside looking in now, and a January departure would make the most sense at this stage.

The 29-year-old would be a solid signing for any League Two side, and could even potentially play for a lower League One team.

He played a role in the club’s promotion last year, so definitely still has plenty to offer for someone else at this stage of his career.
