Speaking on the new Inside Track podcast, Pete O’Rourke offered an update on the future of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. O’Rourke said,

“There’ll be a lot of dominoes to fall potentially, for Joe Gomez to leave Anfield.

“The thing is with Joe Gomez is that he’s happy at Liverpool, he’s in no rush to leave.

“It’s no surprise that clubs like AC Milan were looking at Gomez – they were looking to bring in a new centre-back.

“There was even interest from Brighton late on in the window and [Crystal] Palace had him on their list as well if they did lose [Marc] Guehi.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s interest in Joe Gomez in January, but a lot will depend on how things are going at Liverpool.”

Gomez’s Important Role At Liverpool

Gomez had a solid campaign at the Merseyside club recently as he served as an important member of Arne Slot’s match-day squad. The England international made 17 appearances for the Reds last season across various competitions.

The 28-year-old helped the Reds win the Premier League title earlier this year and will be expected to do the same for them this season. However, he might benefit from a change of scenery this January if he can ensure regular first-team starts over the next few years.

His current contract at Anfield will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, there is no immediate need for Slot to cash in on him this winter.

Should Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Let Gomez Go In January?

Gomez loves a tackle and can read the danger well to make some crucial interceptions for his team on the defensive end of the field. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required and can use his strong 1.88m frame to win a few aerial duels for his side.

The English talent has got a wealth of experience at the highest level. However, Gomez needs to earn regular first-team starts if he wants to make the most of his playing career.

At 28, Gomez is still playing in his prime. Thus, it is only fair to the player for Slot to let him go if he receives a suitable offer for his services this January. The Reds would be better off cashing in on him and using the money generated from his potential sale to bring in a good replacement next year.
