The United States men's national team begins its 2026 World Cup campaign Friday against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium, carrying expectations unlike any previous tournament. The United States should advance from Group D and, honestly, finish first, according to analysis from former USMNT players. But these expectations stem from structural advantages that create both opportunity and pressure.
Playing at home with the strongest roster in its history (based on club affiliations), the USMNT enters with advantages previous generations lacked. An Argentine coach best known for his European club portfolio and with a roster illuminated by players employed in major leagues overseas represents a structural shift in how the program approaches major tournaments.
Mauricio Pochettino talks extensively about culture, intensity, and aggression, implementing a tactical framework designed for tournament football. "Our mindset is to win — to compete, and to win. Compete, compete, compete," said Mauricio Pochettino. "We have very good athletes, very good players. The challenge was to unify and to put it all on the same line."
The quarterfinals would be a grand achievement for the U.S., which hasn't gotten that far since 2002 — the last time the program won an elimination-round match. (The 2010, 2014 and 2022 campaigns ended in the Round of 16.) This historical perspective provides context for current expectations.
The sobering reality is, come July 19, when Infantino hands the World Cup trophy to the winning captain at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, the U.S. will not be No. 1. That honor will almost surely go to France, Spain, Brazil or one of the other global titans that has won this thing before.
The USMNT's Group D opponents present specific tactical challenges that test different aspects of Pochettino's system. Paraguay, in particular, present a dangerous opener. Coming through Conmebol is always hard, and they have quality throughout the squad – Andrés Cubas and Miguel Almirón as MLS standouts, and the likes of Diego Gómez and Omar Alderete in the Premier League. The US are the stronger team, but Paraguay are more than capable of making life difficult and earning a result.
There seems to be little regard for the powers that Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye can offer to the group stage — as well as how unconvincing the USMNT has been under pressure under Pochettino. As such, the USMNT may only beat Paraguay in the opening game, draw with Australia and lose to Türkiye, advancing as a second-place finisher on four points.
It comes with a generational opportunity to accelerate what the U.S.-hosted 1994 World Cup and subsequent building blocks, such as Major League Soccer, helped create. The tournament represents more than immediate results—it's a reference point for the program's long-term trajectory.
As soon as this current generation broke through in the wake of the failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, this particular tournament was seen as a potential moment of culmination for the national team. Expectations were high. More recently, pessimism has been allowed to fester. That Pochettino was hired as a 'one and done' national team manager with only half a cycle to prepare for the World Cup highlights how the USMNT lost its way somewhere along the way.
The expectations surrounding this tournament reflect both the program's progress and the structural challenges of developing a consistent World Cup contender. Success will be measured not just in results, but in how the team executes Pochettino's tactical framework under the unique pressure of hosting.
