With Guido Rodríguez not yet off the table, Valencia have seen an opening for Enzo Barrenechea. Both are Argentine holding midfielders who have already worn the club’s shirt, and either move would require significant spending.
Guido, 32, is a free agent seeking a strong deal. Barrenechea, 25, joined Benfica from Aston Villa last summer, started as a fixture, then lost influence under Mourinho. A Bola reports Benfica are prepared to let him leave in a structure that helps recoup part of the 15 million they paid, three for the loan and 12 after 15 appearances.
Benfica’s priority is to sell for a similar sum, which looks unlikely right now. Valencia would not pursue that route, but would talk if a loan with an option to buy is put on the table.
Barrenechea has made 43 appearances for Benfica in all competitions, including nine in the Champions League, which would make him a high-level signing for Valencia.
The player would be keen to return if presented with a project to get back into Europe, and on a personal level he has support from his sister, who is studying in Valencia.
