According to a report from SPORT, Valencia have taken legal action against Netflix and the production company Conspiracao Films over their portrayal of the club’s supporters in the documentary Baila, Vini.

The series, which focuses on Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr., has become a source of tension after Valencia accused the show of damaging the honour of its fans.

As revealed, the club has filed a lawsuit demanding financial compensation and has also requested a public rectification, which so far has not been provided.

Valencia believe the documentary presents their supporters unfairly and are pushing for corrections to be made directly within the production.

What’s the issue?

The dispute dates back to the heated Valencia vs Real Madrid fixture at Mestalla on 21 May 2023.

On that day, Vinicius denounced racist insults from sections of the crowd before being sent off later in the match.

After the game, Madrid’s then-coach Carlo Ancelotti told the media that the entire stadium had shouted “monkey, monkey” as the Brazilian left the pitch.

Valencia, however, strongly refuted that claim, insisting that what was actually chanted was “fool, fool, fool.”

In Baila, Vini, a TikTok clip of the match was shown with subtitles including the word “monkey” instead of “fool,” something the club argues is both “manipulated” and “false.”

Valencia insist that these subtitles unfairly damage the reputation of their supporters and wants them modified as part of any resolution.

The club has also pointed out that it acted swiftly following the incident. Three fans were identified for racist insults and later sentenced to eight months in prison, along with a two-year ban from entering football stadiums.

Valencia now demand that, should the court rule in their favour, these details must be included in the documentary to provide full context.
