Grêmio may have to look elsewhere for a holding midfielder, with Valencia reported to be working on a loan for West Ham’s Guido Rodríguez until June. According to Gremistas.net, the Spanish club are in talks over a temporary deal, though there has been no official announcement.

The 31-year-old’s contract with the English club is due to expire in June, and the Spanish side would cover his current wages until then if the move is completed.

Grêmio had tabled a bid to buy Rodríguez from West Ham, and were prepared to pay a significant fee despite his short remaining deal. The club offered the player a three-year contract.

Competition from European teams for the Argentine midfielder had already caused concern inside Grêmio.

With Valencia working on a loan, Grêmio are likely to return to the market for alternatives in midfield. A defensive midfielder is a priority for head coach Luis Castro, and they also plan to target a playmaker, with no active talks at present.
