Stade Rennais captain Valentin Rongier, 31, suffered a broken nose in training on 21 July and underwent surgery the following day.
The club said in a statement that he stayed with the squad until the end of the Dinard training camp, where he began his convalescence.
For this type of injury, recovery is generally estimated at between one and three months. His involvement for the start of the league season, set for 23 August against PSG at 20:45, is not necessarily in doubt, though he might not be at 100% against the double European champions.
It is also not ruled out that he will need to wear a protective mask in the coming weeks.
At this stage, Stade Rennais have not specified the exact length of his absence.
