VAR audio reveals debate over Internacional penalty vs Corinthians

The match between Corinthians and Internacional at Beira-Rio ended in a 1-1 draw, with a penalty goal for the Gaucho club at the end of the game, awarded after a controversial play. Just a few hours later, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) released the audio of the conversation between Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima and the video referees.

Initially, the field referee did not call the penalty on Cacá against Bruno Henrique and was confident in his decision. Furthermore, the video referee himself did not see any impact in the first checks, but changed his mind after reviewing the play at another moment.

“There is a pull that stretches the shirt and impacts the action of the player in red. The player tries to go for the ball. [...] I’m going to call for a review, ok? Rodrigo, I suggest a review for a possible penalty. The player is pulled by the shirt from behind, causing impact,” said VAR Gilberto Rodrigues Castro Junior, before the main referee went to the booth.

With Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima going to the monitor, the play is shown and, after checking several angles, the penalty is awarded to Internacional. “This pull, for me, I understand that it impacts, ok?” confirmed the referee, who agreed with the VAR’s analysis.

The Corinthians team did not approve of the decision and continued to complain about the play, even off the field, resulting in cards for Maycon and Dorival Júnior. The coach, in fact, will have to serve a suspension in the next match, which will be against Mirassol at Neo Química Arena.

With the result, the People’s Team remains in the lower part of the table, while the win puts the club close to the top eight. In addition, Internacional remains one point behind Corinthians, but still has a game in hand.
