According to Le Progres, the technology, absent from the competition's early rounds, returns at the quarter-final stage.

Scrutiny of refereeing, and of the video system in particular, has intensified among OL supporters, and within the club's hierarchy and coaching staff in recent weeks. In Marseille, Paulo Fonseca showed his anger and declined to analyse the match immediately, unhappy with certain decisions.

Mathieu Louis-Jean was also sent off for protesting after the Olympico. Meanwhile, general manager Michaël Gerlinger, part of a working group with Olivier Létang of Lille and Thiago Scuro of Monaco, has criticised Ligue 1 for lagging behind the Premier League and the Bundesliga on refereeing.

VAR is credited with correcting nearly eight in 10 contentious calls. It will be available to assist referee Benoit Bastien for OL v Lens.
