Vasco have sacked Fernando Diniz on Sunday 22 after a 1-0 defeat to Fluminense in the first leg of the Campeonato Carioca semi-final, and are weighing up Renato Gaúcho.
ESPN reports that the club want a coach familiar with Brazilian football, so a foreign appointment is not a priority at present.
Rafael Guanaes of Mirassol is also being discussed behind the scenes. He led the São Paulo side to the Libertadores for the first time in their history, boosting his reputation.
Vasco have yet to decide which candidate to open talks with. Beyond Diniz’s exit, Coutinho has also left the club in recent days during a turbulent spell.
Flamengo remain under Filipe Luís, who is focused on Thursday 26 against Lanús in the Recopa Sudamericana second leg at the Maracanã, kick-off 21:30 Brasília time.
