Vasco da Gama suffered a pre-match blow at Neo Química Arena, with midfielder Mateus Carvalho ruled out before kick-off of the Copa do Brasil final against Corinthians. According to PaponaColina, he sustained a sprain to his left knee and left the pitch in tears.
The incident happened during a routine exercise. His foot caught in the turf as he tried to pivot, his body turned while the leg stayed fixed, causing sharp pain.
Visibly distraught and unable to walk unaided, he was helped off by medical staff and taken straight to the dressing room. Fernando Diniz immediately removed him from his matchday options.
Carvalho is often introduced to add defensive stability and fresh legs in midfield during the second half, so his absence is significant.
The medical department will conduct an initial reassessment at the stadium, but a definitive diagnosis will depend on imaging in Rio de Janeiro in the coming days.
