SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup continued with San Diego FC earning a 3-2 win over Deportivo Toluca FC in the First Leg of their Round of 16 series on Wednesday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California, USA.
It was a rough start for the MLS side as Marcus Ingvartsen was sent off in the 12’ due to a red card for a dangerous play in the box. That incident led to the opening goal of the match as Jesús Gallardo slotted the ball from the penalty spot in the 16’.
Despite being down a man, San Diego FC found the equalizer in the 32’ when David Vázquez smashed in a cross by Amahl Pellegrino.
With the contest leveled at the break, San Diego came out firing in the second half as Vazquez got at the end of another cross and put the hosts in the lead in the 46’.
In the 53’, the MLS side buried a stunner with Anders Dreyer ripping a curler from outside of the box to put the stamp on a thrilling rally.
San Diego had a second player sent off in the 88’ as Manu Duah was shown a straight red for a handball in the box. Helinho stepped up for Toluca this time to net the penalty in the 90’, but the Mexican side couldn’t find the late equalizer.
Deportivo Toluca FC will host the Second Leg of the series next Wednesday at Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca, Mexico. The winner on aggregate will advance to the Quarterfinals.
• San Diego FC’s two wins in the current Concacaf Champions Cup have both come at home against Mexican clubs after conceding the opening goal of the match. The club also achieved this against Pumas UNAM (4-1). The last time a team recorded two or more comeback wins after trailing in the tournament was LAFC in 2020, also against Liga MX opponents (2-1 vs. Cruz Azul and 3-1 vs. Club América).
• Jesús Gallardo (Toluca) converted a penalty in the 16th minute, scoring only the second penalty goal of his career. His first came in February of this year in Liga MX against Guadalajara.
• San Diego FC became the first team in the Concacaf Champions Cup, since at least 2016, to win a match after receiving two red cards.
• Luca Bombino (San Diego FC) became the ninth player to register at least two assists in a match in the current Concacaf Champions Cup. The three most recent players to do so were all under 21 years old: Bombino today (19 years, 244 days), Ezekiel Alladoh (20 years, 166 days), and Cavan Sullivan (16 years, 152 days), both for Philadelphia against Defence Force.
• David Vázquez became the first San Diego FC player to score a brace in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Despite being substituted in the 61st minute, the American forward led his team in shots (3) and aerial duels contested (4).
• Despite the loss, Toluca outperformed San Diego FC in possession (66%–34%), total shots (20–8), crosses (18–6), corner kicks (5–0), and expected goals (3.4 xG to 1.2 xG), although 1.6 of Toluca’s xG came from the two penalties taken.
• Toluca became the second team to score two penalty goals in a match in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. LAFC was the first, against Real España in February.
