Chelsea are down to ten men for the second Premier League game in a row.
Following an on field review, Trevoh Chalobah has been sent off for bringing down Diego Gomez of Brighton, who was clear in on goal.
It was actually a mistake from Andrey Santos which caused it all. The midfielder took a poor touch and then sold his defender short with the pass. Two Brighton players were all over the loose ball, both of them ahead of Chalobah and in the clear to shoot.
It was gentle contact but more than enough for the ref to give it. He probably made the right call, making sure the foul was outside the area and almost getting away with it.
Enzo Maresca said after the Robert Sanchez red card last week that he would rather that the goalkeeper had let the goal in and stayed on the pitch. The equation is different when your team is winning, it’s a defender rather than a goalkeeper and there’s been almost an hour played.

We don’t want to take all the blame off Chalobah – for as much as he was dropped into it by his teammate and for all that it was probably a calculated decision to take the red rather than allow a goal, he probably could have made a cleaner attempt to win the ball. If he even nicks it slightly he probably gets away with it.
Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo and now Chalobah will all be missing for next week’s Premier League game now. We’d better hope Josh Acheampong gets up to speed soon, and Benoit Badiashile’s return can’t come soon enough.
