It’s 0-0 with half of the first half played at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea are a little lucky to not be losing.
The Blues conceded after 15 minutes when Eberi Eze lined up a free kick very centre in the D. He blasted his effort through the wall right at Robert Sanchez, and the ball flew into the net.
Eberi Eze fires a shot at Chelsea’s goal.
There was a VAR review with showed that Marc Guehi had shoved Moises Caicedo to within 1 metre of the Chelsea wall, meaning that he had infringed on their safe zone. It was the right decision by the letter of the law, but in reality all it did was let Sanchez off the hook.
At first we wanted to blame the wall, as it looked like it had gone straight through them. But in fact, once Guehi had cleared Caicedo out of the way, Eze had a clear sight of goal. It all looked cleverly planned.
It was a rocket strike, and one could argue that Sanchez was thrown off himself by the sudden gap that appeared directly in front of him, but one still would expect him to do better with a shot straight at him.

There have been doubts about Sanchez ever since he signed for Chelsea, and that’s continued into this summer. His good performances at the Club World Cup convinced a lot of people that maybe he had improved – but this is another worrying sign that the problems of the past are going to continue to bother us.
