Chelsea are ahead in extra time! After a strong fight, the red card given to Wrexham late in regulation has finally told, and the Welsh side are behind for the first time in the game.

Extra time has seen pressure building up, and finally Alejandro Garnacho got the goal that the Blues were threatening. Dario Essugo’s cross was swung in perfectly to the far post where the Argentine found himself unmarked.

The first Chelsea goal will go down as an own goal, despite the fact that it was Garnacho’s shot which caused it. So it only seems fair that he was the one to actually win this game.

We’re also delighted that Essugo got an assist on his first Chelsea appearance since the Club World Cup. Because of extra time, he also got to play more minutes than would originally have been expected.

Chelsea get away with poor performance in exciting cup tie

Chelsea have got away with this poor performance to some degree – they weren’t great at all in this game, they gave away far too many chances and created little in attack until they were facing ten men.

Still, this was a heavily changed team, and all that mattered was going through, which they now look like they’ve done. They’re 15 minutes away from a first quarter final under Liam Rosenior.

In other news…

Josh Acheampong levelled the scores with a smashed finish from close range.
