Video: Platense – Unión saw VAR’s first mistaken identity call

The match in which Platense and Unión drew 2-2 in Vicente López, on the opening matchday of the Clausura, featured the first VAR intervention due to mistaken identity in Argentine football.

Referee Sebastián Martínez, nephew of Federico Beligoy (national director of Referee Training), had mistakenly booked Fagioli, from Tate, for a foul on Heredia. Salomé Di Iorio, in charge of the VAR booth in Ezeiza, called the head referee over to show him that the foul had not occurred, but rather that the Platense player had handled the ball.

As a result, Fagioli’s yellow card was rescinded and Pupa Heredia was ultimately booked.
