LaLiga confirmed on Monday the kick-off times for August’s opening three rounds, with Villarreal starting Iñigo Pérez’s tenure with three consecutive away games due to ongoing works at La Cerámica.

The opener is on Sunday 16 August at 17.00, away to Racing de Santander at El Sardinero. The newly promoted hosts are expected to draw a big crowd to mark their top-flight return.

Only six matches will be played that first weekend because of players involved in the World Cup semi-finals.

Villarreal then visit Atlético de Madrid at the Metropolitano on Sunday 23 August at 17.00, a test against title contenders. Villarreal finished third last season, ahead of Diego Pablo Simeone’s side. Atlético will have fewer days to rest, opening four days earlier at home to Málaga.

Five days later, the third trip takes Pérez’s team to Alavés on Friday 28 August at 21.30 in Mendizorroza, traditionally a rugged assignment.

Villarreal’s home debut is slated for matchweek four, when Deportivo de La Coruña visit La Cerámica.
