After Bayern Munich’s narrow 1-0 win against SL Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday night, Vincent Kompany’s find faced an equally difficult game at St. Pauli in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon.
Jamal Musiala’s long-range goal in the 22nd minute was the difference between the two teams with St. Pauli defending heroically despite Bayern’s dominance. The win now means that they sit six points clear of RB Leipzig, who have a game in hand over the Rekordmeister.
Speaking to media after the game, Kompany reflected on the ‘difficult’ game.
“We felt how special the stadium is. Preparing for the game wasn’t easy after the Champions League match on Wednesday. We played against a team with high energy that plays very compactly. We did well defensively, that was definitely our strength today. We didn’t play as effectively going forward as we have recently. They made it difficult for us. Even after we scored the 1-0, St. Pauli stuck to their game plan. In the end they tried again. It was a difficult game. But we did well.”
Bayern Munich go into the international break as the only unbeaten team in the Bundesliga with eight wins and two draws. At the end of the month, Kompany’s side has Bundesliga games against Augsburg and Borussia Dortmund, while hosting Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal.
