Vinícius Júnior played a decisive role in Real Madrid’s victory over Benfica at the Estádio da Luz and writing his name into the Champions League record books in the process.
The Brazilian winger struck the goal that sealed the win, taking his tally in the competition to 31 and moving him up to second on the list of all-time Brazilian scorers in the Champions League. In doing so, he edged past Kaká (30), while Neymar remains out in front with 43 goals. Rivaldo (27), Gabriel Jesus and Rodrygo (both 26) complete the leading group.
What makes Vinícius’ record even more impressive is his impact in the latter stages of the tournament. Thirteen of his 31 goals have come in knockout ties - a striking 42 per cent of his total return. He has now scored in the knockout rounds for six consecutive seasons, underlining his reputation as a player for the big occasion.
After attracting criticism earlier in the campaign, Vinícius appears to have rediscovered his sharpest form. Under the guidance of Álvaro Arbeloa, he is enjoying his most productive spell of the season, scoring six goals in his last four matches and finding the net in each of his previous three outings.
In total, the 25-year-old has registered 11 goals and nine assists in 35 appearances this term, averaging a direct goal involvement every 137 minutes. That is slightly below last season’s figure of one every 121 minutes, but his recent upturn suggests he is once again peaking at precisely the right time.
